Family-planning services provide individuals and couples with advice on contraception and the possibility of obtaining a suitable contraceptive. Appointments can be made easily and quickly.

Pregnancy-prevention counselling includes the promotion of holistic sexual health. Choosing an appropriate contraceptive requires health background information and an interview about sexual behaviour and the general life situation. The visit also provides a natural opportunity for the prevention of STDs, sexual counselling, and, for example, to detect violent experiences or other problems.

Family-planning services now pay more attention than before to counselling on age and fertility, as well as discussing smoking and intoxication.

Contraceptive counselling is particularly important for young people. Young people can receive advice and help on issues concerning sexuality, both from their school nurse and from the family-planning services. Health education at school is also important.

Contraception can be initiated through school and student healthcare. Birth-control pills can be given here for the first three months.

Pregnancy-prevention counselling always includes a holistic promotion of sexual and reproductive health, including:

  • Counselling on sexuality and relationships
  • Promotion of positive sexuality
  • Maintenance of fertility and contraception
  • STD control
  • Prevention of sexual violence
  • Supporting the development of sexual orientation and gender diversity
  • Other sexuality-related counselling.

Free contraception

The municipality of Salla offers free contraception for all young people under the age of 25, and for women who have recently given birth. In addition, free contraception is provided after an abortion.
The aim is to reduce abortions and unwanted pregnancies for young people under 25, and to reduce the prevalence of chlamydia.

To initiate hormonal contraception, a healthcare professional’s assessment is required. To start using the contraception, you should contact the family-planning services or student healthcare.
During the first visit, the nurse will provide a three-month starter kit or reserve a time to see the doctor for inserting the IUD or implant, if there are no reasons why contraceptives should not be used. If necessary, the nurse will consult a doctor. It is recommended that everyone tests for chlamydia and gonorrhoea within three months after starting the contraception, since these STDs are more common than average in Lapland and can be completely symptomless.

Within three months after starting the birth-control pill, the family-planning services should be contacted and a follow-up appointment with a nurse should be reserved. The follow-up with the doctor should be reserved about six months after beginning contraception.

The customer will continue to have follow-up appointments with the nurse annually and with the doctor every second year.
The contraceptive implant or IUD is not inserted for free in people over 24, except after childbirth or an abortion. The distribution of birth-control pills and V-rings ends when a person turns 25.
