Basic education

Basic education is general education and it is always free of charge. Basic education lasts for nine years and is intended for children from 7 to 16 years old. Its aim is to provide the capabilities and qualifications needed for the studies of the next educational phase.

Every child who is a resident of Finland is subject to compulsory education. Compulsory education begins at the year when a child is seven years old, but it is possible to begin school a year earlier or later. Compulsory education ends after grades 1 to 9 have been completed, or ten years since starting school have passed.

The municipality may also organise further education for young people who have completed the basic education, for example, after the ninth grade if they wish to improve their grades or have not yet decided where to continue their studies. Similarly, the municipality can organise basic education for those adults who are older than the age of compulsory education, meaning it is also possible for adults to complete the basic education studies.

The municipality may also provide preparatory training for immigrants to help start the actual basic education.

Basic education in Salla

All schools in Salla are on the same property at Salla’s School Centre. Kirkonkylä School (primary school, grades 1 to 6), the Sallatunturi School (middle school, grades 7 to 9), and the high school are all here. Approximately 230 people attend basic education here.

We organise basic education so that every child can study according to their own conditions and experience the joy of learning. We want to provide a safe working environment for everyone.

Salla’s basic education culture is guided by the four guidelines: encounter, listen, converse, encourage. The purpose of these themes is to promote joyful learning, kindness, and communality.

One of the most effective ways to increase wellbeing is to help children and young people see their strengths. In basic education, it is important to guide children and young people to discover their character strengths. These are developable skills that define us at our best. They will also help to withstand the hardships that will inevitably be encountered.

The school premises are also used by the Adult Education Centre, the Music Institute of Northeast Lapland, as well as by various clubs and associations. For example, Salla’s 4H Association holds clubs that are free of charge, where students can participate directly after school.

Curricula

A local basic education curriculum has been created for the municipality of Salla, based on the national curriculum criteria OPS2016.

Morning and afternoon activities

Morning and afternoon activities are held at Kirkonkylä School, located in the School Centre. They are open to children in the first and second grades. Children from other grades can also participate if they receive special support, following the Basic Education Act.

The idea is to provide a safe growth environment for a child before and after the school day.

Morning activities are organised as needed, starting at 6:45 until the beginning of the school day, and afternoon activities are arranged flexibly after the school day until 16:30. The children are provided with breakfast in the morning and a snack in the afternoon. Participation is voluntary and subject to a participation fee. The fee is €50/month or €5 (max. 4 times/month) for a single activity day. The sibling discount is half of the monthly fee.

The purpose of morning and afternoon activities is to provide a child with a diverse range of opportunities to participate in controlled and supervised activities, in a safe and stimulating environment. The activities offer opportunities such as play, crafts, sports, baking, outdoor activities, and excursions around the local area, library and bowling alley.

The activities are operated by special-needs assistants and coordinated by the director of the Kirkonkylä School. Welcome to our morning and afternoon activities!
