Museum of War and Reconstruction and Rajakievari Tavern

Salla’s Museum of War and Reconstruction is located in the vicinity of the village of Salla at the area of Salla’s former railway station, in the old residences of the railway workers. In addition to the exhibition spaces, there is a museum shop and café located in the museum building. The museum also has outdoor exhibitions and Salla’s Rajakievari tavern.

The museum’s permanent exhibition tells about Kuoloyarvi at the beginning of the 20th century before the wars, the restless wartimes, and the enormous reconstruction work after the war, where the municipality of Salla, tested by the war, struggled to rise once again.

Welcome!

Salla War and Reconstruction Museum Customer Promise

At our War and Reconstruction Museum, we present the history of Salla, i.e. Kuoloyarvi, from the beginning of the 1900s up until the 1960s. In addition to history, we also tell about current local things, such as cultural and outdoor routes, fishing and fishing locations, and the locations of outdoor firepits.

You can also pop by our place for a coffee. The sweet products in our museum’s Pirtti Café come from the Kursulainen bakery, the gluten-free products are baked by Sallainen Herkku. Enjoy a cup of coffee with a local treat called ‘kampanisu’! Our Pirtti Café also offers vegetarian quiches if you start to feel peckish and meat isn’t part of your diet.

We procure local products for our museum shop. When purchasing, we first prioritise products from Salla, then Lapland, and finally Finland, and we prefer not to buy products from across borders. Our museum shop offers local herbs, canned foods, sweets, juices, syrups, herbal salts, and reindeer crisps. In addition, our shop offers a variety of ointments made from local ingredients.

We skimp on water consumption and heat recovery is also used in the museum. We sort the waste that can be recycled. We only use disposable containers in special cases, and we do not sell bottled water.

We are an accessible museum and our accessible toilet has been called the best in Salla!
